Visit Recap: Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ

When I went to high school in the Valley, weekends were spent going across the border (sorry, mom) to a town in Mexico called Reynosa.  After a night filled with Dos Equis and dancing, nothing helped prepare you for the drive back across than some delicious tacos and beans from a food truck outside of the club.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ took me back to a place that’s filled with happy memories.  It’s also right in my current wheelhouse with the new take on barbecue.

Located in the parking lot of a gas station, Valentina’s has a menu that’s split between “Mex” (tacos) and “Tex” (sandwhiches). There are also a handful of different sides, breakfast items and special weekly items.  You can also order meat by the pound if you so desire.

On this most recent trip I opted for a Smoked Carnitas Taco ($4.50), a Smoked Brisket Taco ($5), and a ‘chico’ size of Charro Beans ( $1.50).

The tacos were definitely a hearty offering, and the first thing you’ll notice are the homemade tortillas.  Not too thick, and perfect to hold the amount of meat inside.

The carnitas taco comes with caramelized onion, cilantro and tomatillo habanero salsa.  I also squeezed the lime that was offered to me.  Good flavor throughout.

The smoked brisket taco comes with chopped brisket, guacamole, and tomato cerrano salsa. This taco was very similar to what a barbacoa taco tastes like.  The smokey meat was prevalent, but I would’ve preferred just some pico de gallo and lime juice. The texture was a little too similar throughout with the guacamole.   I was told later by my buddy who writes ‘The Smoking Ho‘, that you can order the taco with sliced brisket which makes the texture and flavor better.  Will definitely give that a shot next time.

Even though the plastic salsa cup that the beans came in could barely keep them in, for a buck-fifty it was plenty.  Good enough, but I added some of the hot sauce that was on the table for extra flavor.

Plenty of covered seating, and if you’d like a different beverage option you can walk into the convenience store and grab whatever you like.

I've lived in Texas all my life and can't express how much I love this state. I found that I was enjoying these amazing bbq spots and drinking fantastic Texas-made beer and wanted my buddies and I to be able to share them with our readers.
